Baitboat v SpoddingDo you feel one is more accurate than the other or are the results the same no matter???

Bit girly this, but a bait boat lets me get the bait out further (if that's what I'm after) and more accurately. I can cast fairly straight and my accuracy's not bad (usually!) but I haven't got the distance.
Ask Ron about the incident with the trees in the distance casting teach in....... he can cast it miles and he's pretty good most of the time but the only thing he'd have caught that day was a flying fish!

The only time I think / I use a boat boat is to give accurate presentation in certain area's of lakes. I will never use it to fish to a snag.

Not used one much .....but I like the idea of droping your lead and rig .....it must be a better presentation than casting , especialy on a silty water

I own a baitboat and use it when i can on my trips to france.
For presentation, accuracy and stealth they are great.... but ive also seen the arguements they can cause and the liberties that some people take when they are using them.
Maybe its not suprising (although not excusable) when fella's are on the one week a year holiday and are sitting blanking on day 5, they have spent a fortune to get there and dreamt of that big capture.
If i owned a holiday venue i think i'd ban them, too much hassle seeing grown men up in arms

I dont think I would ban them but people do take the pee some what with them. In saying that the casting technique of some leaves alot to be desired

bait boats are normally high on the list of forums, some like them some hate them, it all depends on the person using them........
If you are unfortunate and find yourself next to someone who does not care when they ruin your fishing, when using their boat - then that is terrible, unfortunately then, in some cases would tar' everyone with the same brush.
but I do like boats, and love the way they can get to the most awkward of places, and place your bait exactly how you like it to be placed, if which could never be done with casting.
So I am affraid people that i'm for them...

Yes, me too, AC. On balance a good thing, if used sensibly.
I think it sounds like we need a code of conduct for their use though... any takers?

Code of conduct for BB's
To me its very easy and quite black and white ........its just like casting
Simpley put .....YOU DONT FISH OUTSIDE YOUR PEG and Respect the other pegs water ....as all the pegs are on one side of the lake ....this should easly be achived

Hi all, I personally would use a bait boat at a venue such as the syndicate water. These large fish can and will eat large amounts of bait and spodding will only disturb the swim once the fish are there. Imagine how much food a fish like the large common is going to consume.. I'm not advocating huge baiting campaigns but to attract and hold fish in a swim will need a fair amount of work and a bait boat will definataly help. I've got a bait boat but will gladly "chip-in" towards a syndicate owned one that could be left there if anyone else is interested.. On the subject of boats: is there going to be a dingy on the lake? Even if not for baiting up it would be good to have one in case of snagged fish or just as importantly, retieving broken line or lost rigs...

but a syndicate should be different, our syndicate being a group of like minded anglers, that will respect each other, respect the fish and respect the surroundings then that what Ron said should be a given
i have no problem using them in our situation

there is a hard bottom boat at the lake only problem is insurance .....once you say you are going to have boats on a water ....your premion goes through the roof ....thats why we went for bait boats ( Safety ) .....there is away around the lage baiting though .....as we are only fishing from the one side .....you could bait up from the other side ...just past the pads ...
I have done this on several lakes and it works quite well
you can see the boat in the pic below

Hear hear. 100% behind that.
I've visions of us all getting together, swapping stories over a beer, or a glass of wine. Looks like it might have to be a cup of tea and a digestive now though......

Bait boats like all tools have their place if used sensibly (by which I mean without disturbing fellow anglers)- I use one if I’m short session fishing as a means to get a reasonable amount of ground bait into the swim asap with the minimum of disturbance to the fish - once the bait's in then I will recast to the mark. When I want to top up the bait bed then I will use the Boat with the advantage I can send the rig out at the same time.
I have a viper mk3 which accept a Hummingbird fish finder (used for the depth feature !!) so i don't need to disturb an unfamiliar swim with a marker searching for those illusive fish holding features
Casting is slill in my mind the "gold standard" and has it's place , but so do bait boats, both are valid techniques.

Have a look at this footage ....this water is very simlar to the syndicate lake ....in its make up ......very shalow the one end and about 6 foot at the dam end and only fishable from one side .......I found a bait boat to be a real plush on this water ,,,, and with out it much harder to present your hook bait in the feeding areas ......so yes it is an aid to help catch fish

Sorry hate the bloody things (bait boats)I have seen to many arguments with these things and is not fair when some narrow minded selfish individual ruins some one else's fishing, when your fishing the opposite bank and he feels the need to cross your lines! Personally speaking i think it takes the joy out of fishing and they should be banned on most waters. What is fishing with out casting a rod i may ask? But i can see the benifit for getting tight under trees and for baiting situations in half the time and dropping baits on soft silt. But give me the spod rod any day!!

Trev tried that approch on the lake and killed it for 3 or 4 days
Not a big bait boat man myself ....but I can see the advantages on some waters as long as they are used correctly
