Carp sizeWhat do you feel makes carp in some waters the size they are. Is an abundance of natural food , induced food ( i.e angler ) or just a generic make up?

There has got to be a generic aspect to it. Why would two strains of fish have a diffrent growth rate. Is it hormonal?

Must addmit .....to me the biggest % is down to food sorce

I dunno much about carp, but when I was Bass fishing its a known fact that the warmer the climate the faster the growth rate

I think that is a cotributing factor Trevor as well.

I think it's much to do with all those factors mentioned, plenty of natural food in a water will produce larger carp, heavily fished waters with plenty of high protein foods going in year in and year out will make for the porkers we see today. Longer warmer seasons will add to fish growth with fish feeding well into winter where they wouldn't have done a decade or two ago. As Carp Guru mentioned, generics, some strains of carp are designed to grow to large proportions, but we will still see for years to come the older strains that are nearer to natural designs still around in many lakes, but will not grow to the prortions of the newer strains, so we will still see a mixture of different sizes at maturity. I hope it stays that way, i wouldn't like to catch monster sized fish every day, not that i do now lol.

Good post Kipper
and yes it would totaly destroy what us as anglers are serching for if every lake was just full of monsters as part of the buzz in fishing is woundering whats on the other end once you have had a take ......will it be a doudle a twenty ?? or if we are lucky a 30 or a 40 or very lucky even bigger ..its what gets you hart pumping once you get that take ......the unknown anticipation of what you might have hooked in too

not small, not huge but one that i was very glad to have caught even at 2am in minus 4 degrees of frost. After 3 months away from the bank it wouldnt have mattered if it was 8 pound
Very distinctive the horseshoe fish.

Nice winter fish there Hodster, and an unusual one, you could almost call it a common, and also a fully scaled mirror, beautiful colour too. Certainly a prize to have this time of year, well done mate, worth putting up with the cold weather i'm sure, big thumbs up mate.

I think there are 3 main factors to fish growth, natural food source is the most important but you also need the water quality and the weather.
