It would be nice to pick a few fish out that are distinctive and possibly name the fish??

I wont steal Rons thunder, but I went across to help with the stocking and you guys have some cracking fish to pit your wits against
153 fish have been put in. Mostly commons and the SMALLEST fish introduced to the lake was around the 21lbs mark.
I will leave it to Ron to tell you the average size and the size of the bigger ones
You members certain have some stunning "VIRGIN" carp to fish for
kind regards Jeff

Hi all ……..I have just returned from the stocking of the Syndicate lake in France.
So here is a small update for you all.
I travelled over in the early ours of Wednesday morning with a friend of mine Jeff,
I was a bit unsure if we would be travelling out on the ferry I had booked the day before, as P&O had already stopped several sailings earlier the day due to travel over to France, due to the bad weather and strong winds, I had checked their web site before setting out on the Tuesday night and it said they had resumed sailings and was working their way through the back log.
Trish said she would check the website as I travelled down, just in case there was any changes or they stopped the sailing’s once again, as the weather for cast was not looking that good at the time I set out to travel.
The idea being if they did stop the sailings again, I could head for the channel tunnel instead and travel over on the train. The timing was very tight as if I did miss my sailing for any reason, I would not have made it to the lakes in time for the netting to chose my fish.
It was an eventfully journey, with the poor driving conditions due to the weather and also the fact that the M20 was closed quite close to the ferry port with the massive back up of trucks that where waiting to go on the ferry’s from the earlier cancellations.
So with this in mind we went on the M2 only to find about half way to Dover, that was also closed off at one section, with no diversion signs in place.
Well to cut a long story short, we over come the hold ups and got to the ferry port, only to be greeted by a very large back up of trucks waiting to get on the sailings, but lucky for us we sped down the side of them using the car lane and manage to squeeze on the next ferry out as we was one of the only two cars on the crossing.
Once we arrived at Callis, it was time to put my foot down on the tool roads to make it to the lake in time, driving conditions where once again against us, as we had been greeted by thick fog and more bad weather, so it was a none stop drive not dropping below 70 miles per hour, luckily the tool roads where quite empty and we made it to the lake just as they had pulled the nets through.
I had had a phone call from Paul Bachelier the fish farmer about an hour before we arrived at the lake they was netting, checking on our progress as I had spoke to him the night before, saying their might be a problems on the ferry crossing.
So as we pulled up at the lake they was neeting, he was relived to see us, as the transfure of the fish had already been put off once in December, due to the lakes in France freezing up.
We then went through the process of weighing the fish and transferring them to the Syndicate lake what was about a twenty minuet drive away
We ended up with a totally of 153 carp …..the smallest being just over 20 lbs and the largest King Carp being a 46.00 lb Common.
Paul also gave me a couple of big mouth carp for the lake.
Here are a few pictures of the bigger carp as they went into the syndicate lake.
35.00 lb Mirror
46.00 lb Common
60+ Big Mouth Carp
70+ Big Mouth carp
I would have loved to have taken more pictures of the fish that went in, but was quite buisy transferring them from the tanks in to the lake and also chipping the bigger ones for protection against fish theft.
I was trained in this process last year by a friend of mine Dr Bruno Broughton
it’s a process where a small chip about the size of a grain of rice is injected into the fish and can then be scanned to see who it is registerd too, just like you do with you pet dog.
afterwards,we went back to Paul’s lake to have a bite to eat and talk about how they control their waters etc
We then returned to the Syndicate lake, to sit and have a dink and talk with François et Benoîte the owners of the lake.
They are wonderful people and looking forward to meeting the new syndicate members and making new friends to practise their English on.
By this time the night was drawing in, so we said out goodbyes to François et Benoîte and returned back to Paul’s lake where he said we could spend the night. It did not take any rocking for me to fall of to sleep as I had been driving most the day and all the previous night, the next morning we said our good buys to Paul and set off for the ferry port on a journey back home.
Well I think I will end this update here and if you have any questions …please feal free to pm me ……….Big Ron.

Here's a bit of info I found:
Feeding Habits - A zooplankton filter feeder which feeds near the surface gulping water and passing it over its gill rakers.
Hmm, zig rigs or float fishing perhaps?

A job very well done mate, the 46lb common is absolutely beautiful, I have never seen a big mouth carp before, they are really summink,do you fish for them the same as you would any carp? I'd love to take one of the top!!!!

Well its hats off to Ron and Trish + all the people who helped them, well done guys i bet your so proud of your new siblings !! Absolute stunners by the looks of things.
Ron my cheque is in the post, can't wait to see you at the lake mate.
Does anyone agree that a few Grass carp wouldn't go a miss ? Personally i would love to have the chance of a grassy and they help to keep weed down etc don't they ? But thats just a thought, i'm happy to fish for those stunners for the time being :)
Ron, what was the purpose in the Bigmouth Carp being introduced ? They're a crazy looking fish, would be fantastic to add that to my list of species !
Here's to fishing with you all in the near future,
best regards
Danny boy.

Hi Danny Boy Do you think the vegetation around the lake would be an advantage. I hear what you are saying , I to would love to catch one but they can also be rather destructive??
Your thought welcome.

These fish are highly effective biological controls of nuisance weed and algae problems. Stocking rates for Grass Carp need to be carefully assessed for each body of water. These fish have voracious appetites and overstocking can result in the removal of too much aquatic vegetation. If the Grass Carp consume too many plants, important habitat is destroyed, and other fish populations can be adversely effected. Stocking rates vary between 5 and 15 fish per acre depending on the amount and type of vegetation, depth and age of the pond, and the type of water supply feeding the pond. Sterile or triploid grass carp are the only type of grass carp that can be legally stocked in many waters in the US and Europe. This is due to concerns over the potential impact they may have on sensitive aquatic habitats if their reproduction is not controlled. In the warmer months, the Grass Carp can consume the equivalent to it's own body weight, daily.

Lads Im taking advice from the fish farmer in that Area
as they control some of the best waters in France ....Im sure they know what they are doing

Was just a thought as i know nothing about fish stocking and the like. I just thought maybe 20 grassies knocking around would be nice, especially seeing that the recomended stocking level is between 5 - 15 fish per acre a few bashing around in there would pose no problem at all ??
Ron i'm growing on a beautiful Ghosty in my pond, he's piled on 4 lbs in under a year !!! Must be those half hallibuts he's eating .... He'll be your's when he's a 20+
Any other fish planned on going in ?

Yes ....there will be sum preditors going in very shortly to Control the smaller fish, once the carp breed
I was also tying with the idea of a few good cats
as for carp ....what ever is took insyndicate £££, will be used for more big carp next year
I want it to be a the sort of water in the next 2 or 3 years ....that we are only fishing for 15 Kilo + fish

ron, a really interesting thread , and you've added some cracking fish to your venue, I can see your syndicate members will be well chiffed fishing it.

is there any food going in the lake at the moment (when it is not frozen)?
i know you said they are virgin fish but have they seen a boiliee before, if not have you ever fished for carp that havent seen the smelly round balls, do they take long to get on the bait?
|
Big Ron
|
Food has started going in and yes they may take a bit of time to get on the round balls ....but dont worry as its fished more, they will soon regonise boilies
Sweet Corn is a great starter ....the first time I fished Lake Chira ( 1999 in its early days ) ....I took 19 bags of boilies out and brought 18 back ....all the fish came to swwet corn.
this was my best from that first trip on Sweet corn
I did revisit it a few years back with Jeff ..it was covered in International carper ....I had 42 carp all on Boillies ...so as you can see ...they soon learn

Nice fish Ron
I sneaked a day up at Chira last January when i was out there with my Mrs on holiday.
I had been chating to "Johninspain" from one of the other forums, he lives out there and he kindly let me tag along with him for a day.
We only managed bass that day but it was a great experince to see the lake and witness the stunning scenery.
Once our baby is a bit older we will be going back the GC, ideal winter break we really like it there. No doubt i'll try and get back up in the mountains.

I had some realy great times up at Chira and just look at how big the fish grow

Thats a spooky photograph Ron, how was that shadow formed, can't quite visualise it with the surrounding area, a chance in a million to see that shape, nice one.
|
Big Ron
|
it was formed by the rocks behind me which had a leaning tree on the top of them ...... as the sun got higher and higher it would cast the shadow of the top and leaning tree on the far bank and that shadows reflection would form to make a fish

that is amazing

Big Al, I think you may have your wires crossed here buddy. King carp are a strain of carp we all fish for in most waters.
Do you mean the "Big Mouth Carp" of which two were introduced to give a good indicator of water quality?
kind regards Jeff

Big Al

sorry, yes those weird big mouth things.
never heard the water quality thing, they're still wierd things.
|
Trish
|
Think of canaries down the mines.... the big mouth carp are sensitive to water quality etc and the theory is that they'll be the first to show signs of distress if there's a problem. (Poor things... )
They are weird looking though aren't they?
