Before my time it was believed that carp didnt feed in the winter, yes that's going back a few years to the early day pioneers like Richard Walker,
But i was reading an article the other day talking about someone fishing in the winter, it was the early days of the hair rig and the guy was canning the lake he was on .... i think it was one of the Waveny lakes. I have also read similiar artilces about people doing the same on other lakes around that era.
...so why is it that nowdays winter carping is so hard, yes there are instances when someone does have a hauling session as the fish have switched on but normally that is a very short lived thing.
My opinion is (and i am no bait buff) that the quality of the bait we put in these days gives the fish enough nutrition to seee them through. I may be wrong... anyone else have any theories? Or any winning methods for winter carping

I agree with your bait theory Darren, I to beleive that we are making the carp fat and lazy with the HNV baits, I would imagine that it was a lot better when natural baits were used like the humble worm. I myself am gonna try method fishing in weed this winter, never done it before, will let you know,Trev. |

good luck Trev
if you are on a water without many nuisance fish the maggots are the way to go.... i had a manic 48 hour session a couple of years back.... mid jan and temps so cold i reeled in at 9 pm on the second night as the unhooking mat turned into a lump of ice
... the result 14 carp inlcuding 8 over 20lb, an unbelieveable session
